Protagonist of GTA San Andreas
GTA San Andreas focuses on Carl Johnson (CJ), the key character whose journey powers every crucial event in the storyline.
Carl Johnson “CJ”
Voice — Young MaylayIn Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the narrative is built around Carl Johnson — CJ — a central figure of the Grove Street Families in Los Santos. He leaves the city in 1987 after a painful family tragedy and relocates to Liberty City. In 1992 he heads back home after losing his mother, Beverly Johnson. Shortly after he arrives, dishonest officers from C.R.A.S.H. pressure him into working for them. Back in Los Santos, CJ finds his gang stripped of its power — the Grove Street Families are struggling to survive. He resolves to rebuild everything with his brother, Sweet, and together they dedicate themselves to reviving the gang and reclaiming the streets.
Core Characters GTA San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas includes a varied cast of characters, from CJ’s allies to main antagonists and mission-related characters, all contributing a part in defining Carl Johnson’s journey.
Sweet Johnson
Voice — Faizon LoveThe elder brother of Carl Johnson and head of the Grove Street Families. He holds the gang together through its darkest and most turbulent stretch. A Ballas drive-by aimed at Sweet failed, but it cost the brothers their mother — the loss that brings CJ back to Los Santos. Without Carl, Sweet cannot hold the line as rival gangs widen their reach. When CJ returns, Sweet is suspicious at first, but soon sees they want the same thing, and the two set out to rebuild the family’s lost dominance in a city that has changed beyond recognition.
Big Smoke
Voice — Clifton PowellAn admired, high-ranking figure inside the Grove Street Families — until he turns on his own crew and aligns with the Ballas, the twist that reshapes the entire story. After the betrayal he climbs fast through the Los Santos underworld, building ties with the Russian Mafia and the Vagos, weakening Grove Street and rewriting the city’s power structure in the process.
Ryder
Voice — MC EihtA senior presence in the Grove Street Families who works closely with Carl on a run of robberies, mostly for weapons. His loyalty eventually breaks down: Ryder betrays his own gang and links up with C.R.A.S.H., the Ballas and the Los Santos Vagos, tipping the balance of the gang war.
Frank Tenpenny
Voice — Samuel L. JacksonA crooked LSPD officer and C.R.A.S.H. member who bends his authority to serve himself. He blackmails Carl Johnson relentlessly, forcing him into crimes under the threat of arrest, and hands him jobs as dangerous as seizing classified FBI files.
Cesar Vialpando
Voice — Clifton Collins Jr.Carl’s brother-in-law and the leader of the Varrios Los Aztecas in El Corona. The two first meet through street racing, and their early friction turns into deep trust. Cesar stays loyal throughout, riding with CJ to hunt down the men who forced him out of Los Santos.
Eddie Pulaski
Voice — Chris PennA dishonest C.R.A.S.H. officer who pulls Carl into dangerous, coerced jobs through fear and pressure. His mind games tighten C.R.A.S.H.’s grip on CJ, leaving him boxed in with almost no choice.
Catalina
Voice — Cynthia FarrellCesar’s cousin, who periodically drags Carl into dangerous jobs of her own. She and CJ have a brief relationship, and even after they part she keeps calling — mostly to taunt him about Claude.
The Truth
Voice — Peter FondaA free-spirited hippie living out in Flint County who grows close to Carl in the Badlands. When his cannabis farm is discovered, CJ helps burn the crop to stay ahead of the authorities. Later, CJ lifts a jetpack out of Area 69 for him.
Jizzy B.
Voice — Charlie MurphyRuns the Pleasure Domes club and holds real weight in the city’s underworld, working alongside T-Bone Mendez and Mike Toreno in the drug trade. He hires Carl to rescue Toreno and protect his shipments from rival crews — and is later taken out by CJ for pushing drugs into Los Santos and Grove Street.
T-Bone Mendez
Voice — Kid FrostA high-ranking member of the Loco Syndicate who commands the San Fierro Rifa within the city’s trafficking network. He never quite trusts CJ, but still works with him to get Mike Toreno out. Carl and Cesar Vialpando eventually bring him down for supplying Los Santos and the Grove Street Families.
Mike Toreno
Voice — James WoodsForms an unexpected alliance with Carl while working undercover for a classified government agency. Their partnership is volatile and full of friction, yet CJ keeps running covert jobs for him. Toreno’s double life keeps him tangled in the Loco Syndicate’s operations.
Kent Paul
Voice — Danny DyerManager of The Gurning Chimps, who arrives in San Andreas with the band. He crosses paths with Carl after being stranded in the desert alongside Maccer. Kent later connects CJ with Ken Rosenberg for crucial intelligence on Caligula’s Palace — CJ helps him escape Salvatore Leone in return, while Kent pushes Madd Dogg’s comeback.
Maccer
Voice — Shaun RyderA Manchester vocalist and the front man of The Gurning Chimps. Carl rescues him and Kent Paul from the desert, then protects the pair again from Salvatore Leone. Maccer ends up living with Kent, and his erratic behaviour makes him a running joke for CJ and Sweet.
Ken Rosenberg
Voice — William FichtnerRuns Caligula’s Palace, a casino tangled up with the Forelli, Leone and Sindacco families. He lives in fear of reprisal from all three, and has a history of substance abuse behind him. Ken puts Carl to work stopping the tension from boiling over into open war; with CJ’s help he later slips their grip and becomes Madd Dogg’s accountant.
Madd Dogg
Voice — Ice-TA successful Los Santos rapper living in a Mulholland mansion at his peak. After his rhyme book is stolen and his manager is killed, his career collapses; he loses the mansion and drifts to Las Venturas. CJ pulls him back from the edge and helps rebuild his music career from nothing.
Wu Zi Mu “Woozie”
Voice — James YaegashiKnown as Woozie, a blind but commanding figure among the Mountain Cloud Boys in San Fierro. He allies with Carl after CJ backs him during a casino deal, and the bond deepens through shared risk. Woozie also controls the gambling scene in Chinatown and runs the Four Dragons Casino.
Zero
Voice — David CrossA 28-year-old tech expert running the Zero RC shop in San Fierro, locked in a feud with Berkley of the rival Top Fun store. Zero enlists Carl to undercut Berkley’s business, which eventually drives him out of the city. He provides the electronics for the Caligula’s Palace heist — and takes a punch from CJ for nearly wrecking the job.
OG Loc
Voice — Jonathan AndersonA struggling rapper attached to the Grove Street Families. He returns in 1992 after a short stretch inside and takes a job at Burger Shot, then hires CJ to push his music career — which drags them both into a run of clashes. In the end, CJ and Madd Dogg chase him down in West Los Santos and take back the stolen rhyme book.
Kendl Johnson
Voice — Yolanda “Yo-Yo” WhittakerSister to Carl, Sweet and Brian, and partner to Cesar Vialpando — the tie that binds the two families. She moves to Angel Pine as pressure from the Ballas and Los Santos Vagos mounts. Kendl helps CJ run the garage and the Four Dragons Casino, and returns with Cesar, who announces he wants to marry her during Los Desperados.
